Betsy Covington, president and CEO of the Community Foundation of the Chattahoochee Valley, explains why CFCV said yes to On the Table, and why it matters.
The Community Foundation’s involvement in On the Table stems from our belief that it takes ALL of us to build the community that we want. Though our mission of “enabling and promoting philanthropy that inspires, facilitates and fosters a vibrant and engaged Chattahoochee Valley” is geared toward helping people use their assets to improve their community, who says that those assets have to only be about money? We believe that people who feel connected are better, happier citizens who make their communities better.
Actually, two of our six organizational values relate directly to the underpinnings of On the Table: Inclusiveness: We are an institution of communal good; we seek to work collaboratively and to mobilize the resources of the community to meet the community’s needs and Knowledge: We learn continually and are a repository of community understanding, knowledge and expertise; we use that information to engage others and mobilize philanthropy to make a difference. (The other values are Service, Stewardship, Integrity, and Independence; check out our goals for each at cfcv.com.)
When the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation (one of our donors) invited us to partner with them in On the Table, we saw the chance to knit the members of our diverse communities together in new ways. We believe that people are hungry for connection and belonging, and we love On the Table’s message that ALL are invited.
